A flat or graded wash is laid by tilting the board slightly, charging a fully loaded brush, and pulling one continuous band of pigment across damp paper, then reloading and overlapping each next band into the wet edge of the one before. Streaks come from a brush that has run dry mid-stroke or from going back into a band that has already begun to set. The whole operation depends on timing: the paper must be damp enough to fuse the bands and dry enough not to flood them.

Why the wet edge decides the result

A wash is not painted, it is joined. Each band of color is laid beside the previous one while that previous band still has a sheen, so the two merge at the boundary. If the boundary has lost its sheen, the new band sits on top as a separate stripe and the wash reads as a set of lines. If the paper is still glossy and pooling, the new band pushes the earlier pigment outward and leaves a pale channel. The practical test is the reflection of a window or lamp on the paper. A wet edge shows a soft, continuous sheen. When that sheen turns matte, the band has closed and the next stroke will not fuse. Working on a slight incline, roughly ten to fifteen degrees, lets gravity carry the bead of moisture downward and keeps it from pooling at the bottom of the stroke. What is glazing in watercolor and how do I build depth in layers?

Glazing is the application of a thin, transparent layer of color over a fully dry earlier layer, so that light passes through both films and returns from the paper beneath. Depth in watercolor is built this way, by stacking transparent films rather than by loading one passage with heavy pigment. Two conditions govern it. The first is that the underlying layer must be bone dry. A glaze laid over a damp layer lifts the pigment below and mixes on the paper, which produces a flat, dull result. The second is that each glaze must be thin. A glaze is a tint, not a coat of paint; if the brush leaves a visible film of color with no water in it, the layer is too strong and will block the light that makes the stack luminous. Order matters. Transparent pigments glaze cleanly over one another. Staining pigments, which bind to the paper fibers, are difficult to lift and will dominate anything laid over them. Opaque or sedimentary pigments, such as the cadmiums and the earths, sit on the surface and hide what is beneath, so they belong near the end of the sequence, if at all. A workable discipline is to decide the final value of a passage before starting and then to reach it in three or four passes, letting each dry completely. The first pass establishes the hue, the second deepens the value, the third adjusts temperature, warm over cool or cool over warm. A passage built in one heavy application cannot be corrected; a passage built in four thin ones can be adjusted at any stage.

Why does my watercolor turn muddy, and how do I fix hard edges and blooms?

Mud is the result of too many pigments mixing on the paper while the surface is still active. Three or four colors stirred together in a wet passage lose their separate identities and settle into a neutral gray brown. The usual causes are a brush that is dirty between colors, a palette that has been allowed to run together, and an unwillingness to let a passage dry before touching it again. The correction is procedural rather than chemical. Rinse the brush between every color change, mix each color in a separate well, and limit a single wet passage to two pigments that are known to combine well. Where a passage has already gone muddy, the options are to lift it while still damp with a clean, thirsty brush, or to let it dry and glaze a transparent color over it to shift the temperature. Scrubbing at a dried muddy passage damages the paper surface and will show through everything laid afterward. Hard edges form when a wet passage is allowed to dry with an abrupt boundary, either because the paper was unevenly damp or because a stroke was made into a drying area. The remedy is to soften the boundary while it is still workable, with a clean damp brush drawn along the edge, or to plan the edge deliberately and keep it crisp as a compositional device. Not every hard edge is a fault; a sharp edge against a soft one is one of the reliable ways to suggest form. A bloom, sometimes called a backrun or a cauliflower, appears when water is introduced into a passage that has begun to set. The water pushes pigment outward and leaves a pale center with a dark rim. Blooms happen when a brush that is wetter than the paper touches a half dry wash, or when a drop of water falls onto drying paint. Once dry, a bloom can be softened by rewetting the whole passage evenly and letting it dry flat, or it can be accepted and used, since blooms read convincingly as the irregular edges of clouds and water.

How paper and brush choice change the wash

A wash behaves differently on cotton paper than on wood pulp. Cotton, particularly in heavier weights, holds water longer and tolerates rewetting, which gives more time to join bands and to lift mistakes. Wood pulp paper absorbs faster, so the wet edge closes sooner and corrections are harder. A paper sized internally and on the surface resists pigment long enough to allow a graded wash to be smoothed; a weakly sized sheet grabs the first band and will not release it. Brush shape matters as much as hair. A round with a fine point lays a narrow band and releases water steadily; a flat or a wash brush covers ground quickly but dumps its reservoir at the start of the stroke, which is a common source of a dark leading edge. Loading the brush fully and then drawing it once across the palette rim to remove the excess gives a more even release than squeezing it against the well. The angle of the board, the dampness of the paper, and the load in the brush are the three variables that a painter can actually control. Changing one at a time, and noting what happened, is faster than trying to hold all three in mind at once.

A short sequence for practice

Tape a quarter sheet of cotton paper to a board and tilt it slightly. Mix one pigment in a single well to a middle value. Load a round brush fully, draw one horizontal band across the top, reload, and lay the next band so it touches the wet edge of the first. Continue to the bottom without returning to any earlier band. Let the sheet dry flat. Repeat the exercise with a graded wash, adding clean water to the brush for each successive band. Repeat it a third time on dry paper, laying a thin glaze over the first dried wash and noting how the value deepens without the surface turning dull. These three sheets, kept and dated, show more about wash control than any amount of reading, because they record what the paper actually did on a given day.
